2003 Analysis of Revisions to the IBC - Structural Provisions

The Structures and Code Institute (a subsidiary of S.K. Ghosh Associates Inc.) is pleased to announce the availability of the new publication 2003 Analysis of Revisions to the IBC - Structural Provision. This publication analyzes the changes to the 2003 International Building Code ®(IBC ®) structural provisions (Chapters 16 through 23). The 2003 IBC differs primarily from the 2000 IBC in that referenced standards have been updated to reflect the most current standards, and there is an increased reliance on the 2002 edition of ASCE 7 Standard Minimum Design Load for Buildings and Other Structures (ASCE 7-02) for prescribing structural loading requirements. This publication provides explanations and guidance on how to use the ASCE 7-02 standard in conjunction with the 2003 IBC as well as thorough discussion of the changes in the updated referenced material standards (e.g. ACI 318-02, 2002 edition of MSJC code, AISC 341-02, AF&PA NDS-01). Other important topics discussed in this publication are:

• Significant revisions to the seismic provisions, which are largely based on changes incorporated into the 2000 NEHRP Recommended Provisions for Seismic Regulations for New Buildings and Other Structures.
• Revisions to the footing and foundation provisions.
• Amendments to referenced standards.
• Revisions related to shear reinforcement in slabs supported directly on columns (flat plates).
• New perforated shear wall provisions for steel and wood.
