Meeting the Challenges of Structural Renovation: Alabama & Beyond:
Renovation of building structures is a complex matter that is rarely taught in engineering colleges. There are few specific design standards available and even fewer practical sources of information. The seminar fills the void by providing a broad overview of the challenges that commonly arise during planning and execution of building renovation projects.

The morning session starts with an overview of complex building code provisions dealing with the subject of structural renovations. The discussion then proceeds to methods of condition assessment for steel, concrete, masonry and wood structures.

The afternoon session is devoted to practical problems experienced by building structures and to specific effective yet economical renovation techniques to remedy these problems, whether it is deterioration or a lack of structural capacity. The presentation emphasizes practical methods of strengthening and repair of buildings rather than theory. To cover a lot of technical material within a short time frame, the discussion is focused on renovation of iron and steel structures and wood-framed buildings.

The Seminar Instructor will be Mr. Alexander Newman, P.E., F.ASCE, he is a forensic and structural consultant in Needham, Massachusetts. During more than 35 years of professional practice, Mr. Newman has been involved with structural design, renovation, and failure investigation of numerous structures around the country. Mr. Newman’s many publications include a number of award-winning articles that appeared in leading engineering maga-zines. His definitive reference book Structural Renovation of Buildings: Methods, Details, and Design Examples was published by McGraw-Hill Book Company in 2001. He is the author of two other authoritative books from McGraw-Hill: Metal Building Systems: Design and Specifications, now in its 2nd edition (2004) and translated into Chinese, and Foundation and Anchor Design Guide for Metal Building Systems (2013).Mr. Newman has led numerous ASCE-sponsored educational seminars around the country for design professionals, building officials, owners and contractors.

Seminar/Expo fee includes buffet lunch & product exhibits. There will be prize drawings for those attendees who visit every exhibit.
